Programma

We will meet in Washington Heights, which is mostly a Latin community. As we walk we will see how the public art in the neighborhood reflects on the unique experience of this particular group of New Yorkers. While in the area we will also see the oldest mansion in Manhattan. On the second half of the experience we'll explore Central Harlem, the cultural capital for people of African descent.

As a long-time resident in the areas explored on this tour, as well as a licensed sightseeing guide and art historian, I will help you create unique memories that will profoundly enhance your visitor or resident experience in this city.

The stories related will show you a side of NYC life that is often overlooked. We will finish in a public library with powerful art installations that will inspire you to continue exploring the riches of these northern neighborhoods in Manhattan.

I'm a NYC licensed sightseeing guide and art historian. My area of focus is art in public spaces as it is the most accessible and communicates powerful cultural messages. My aim is to help visitors see realities that typicality lay unseen.

We will meet at a small park where we'll set the tone for this local NY experience. We will later explore the Audubon Terrace Historic District, Trinity Cemetery, Morris-Jumel Mansion and a public library dedicated to expanding the research and knowledge of people of African descent. These destinations and other sights will connect you to the rich cultural patrimony of the local inhabitants in these off-the-path sections in NY.

I said he was a walking Wikipedia, but he's more than that. An inspiring tour includes mostly the knowledge with unique perspective or the quieter side at historical stage, but our talk did touches those driven power behind the curtain that actually made reshaping reality possible. We've gone through the inclusive Puritanism church, proud community, migration, policies against violence and a path to brighter future by propaganda arts and education. Above these social experiment instances, we also touched a little about differences between China and western world, gaps among different individual realities, free will, time, and science as a tool to explore and simulate reality. Thinking back it's interesting with the rising history of the Harlem community, he pictured the future world to be minarch with the reservation of believing Democratic society would be able to push human being to the next level. Afterall I think this 2.5 hours tour plus dinner is comfortable, informative and Juan's openness and passion made it a communication instead of a lecture from single side. Keep in touch and every good wish to your history recording project. My view of NYC changed a bit.

It was a pleasure walking and discovering Washington Heights and Harlem. It was different to what we expected and with a couple of surprises. I can only recommend this tour if you want to explore another site of New York!

We enjoyed our tour with Juan! He put together an interesting combination of street art and historical locations that we never would have stumbled upon on our own.

I still can’t believe how much of Washington Heights and Harlem we got to see in a short 2.5 hours. Juan showed us a lot of mural art in Washington Heights, a historic cemetery, several historic churches, and one of the oldest (and most beautiful!) streets in Manhattan, as well as a historic mansion. In Harlem, we saw historic architecture, learned about famous Harlem residents and civil rights movements. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who’s interested in seeing parts of Manhattan that aren’t on the beaten tourist path, and who wants to get to know the culture and art from a local’s perspective. Thanks for the lovely afternoon, Juan!

My husband and I were in town for our anniversary and wanted to see art and culture. Our host was very friendly and knowledgable of the history of the area we walked through. We enjoyed learning and the conversation we engaged in with Juan.
