Programma

In this neighborhood stands a restored 19th century market, now a food hall featuring local and international cuisine. We will begin our journey on foot here at the St. Roch Market. Feel free to stop at any number of the vendors for a refreshment prior to learning the history of the market and neighborhood. I live and breathe New Orleans architecture- its vernacular quirkiness requires a keen eye to dissect and explain, and I'm excited to share my knowledge of New Orleans building styles. We'll walk 6 blocks along St. Roch Avenue, lined with centuries-old Live Oak trees, toward St. Roch Cemetery, one of New Orleans' most intriguing and off the beaten path cemeteries. Along the way, you'll learn about the storied history of the neighborhood and explore architectural building styles. Within the walls of the cemetery, New Orleans burial customs will be explained and we will discuss the history of both the cemetery itself as well as the funerary architecture of various tombs. We will also explore the chapel, in which unusual offerings are left in thanks to St. Roch for prayers answered. We have encountered Jazz Funerals on this experience. It's rare but you never know!
Other things to note
Food and drink available for purchase, and bathrooms are located inside St. Roch Market.
Wear comfortable clothing and footwear.

A native New Orleanian, I've lived in the Bywater neighborhood for the past 16 years. I have a passion for sharing my knowledge of New Orleans history, architecture, culture, customs, and idiosyncrasies. I have a particular obsession with our beautiful cemeteries, the "cities of the dead." I've been exploring and photographing our cemeteries since I was an adolescent. Now a licensed tour guide with the City of New Orleans, allow me to take you off the beaten path to discover the secrets beyond Bourbon Street.

This experience is bookended by two fascinating places: on one end, left abandoned and near collapse since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the historic St. Roch market has risen from the ashes with a $3.7 million renovation. On the other end, six blocks behind the market, sits beautiful St. Roch cemetery, a little-explored hidden gem among New Orleans' famous "Cities of the Dead."

This was a great tour! It ended up being pretty cold and the others canceled but Scott was still willing to give us the tour. He provided a bunch of information and even extra information on the city which was helpful. I would definitely recommend taking this tour!

This was the perfect start to our vacation. Scott has a vast knowledge of the area and the people that have lived there. He begins the tour at the Market where he gives you not only the history of market itself but also shares photos of the market and the area over the years. As Scott walked us through the St. Roch area he explained the different houses and how the effects of Hurricane Katrina can still be seen today. His love and pride for the area is infectious and really did add so much to the tour itself. The cemeteries are beautiful. Scott describes the reasoning behind the above ground burial and also how the family tombs are used. Not once did he make us feel rushed (which is another wonderful part of taking his tour) and he made sure any questions we had were answered. Another big plus on this tour for us is Scott gave us some great recommendations on the area from food to places to listen to music. Thank you Scott for an amazing tour and for showing us the St. Roch area from past to present.

We really enjoyed our tour with Scott. We liked the unique location and the attention to detail with the old photos Scott shared with us. Scott had very good communication before and during the tour, and even made some recommendations for good food and a brewery at the end of our tour so we could get some lunch! It was just our party on the tour, which felt very safe and covid-friendly.

Scott brought an unparalleled level of historical and personal detail to the tour, all infused with a great sense of humor. From historical documents, maps, and photos to personal photos, videos, and anecdotes he really gave us an in depth background of the neighborhood and the city that could only come from someone who cares deeply about his work and loves to share what makes NOLA unique. There was absolutely nothing stale or boring about any part of the tour. I highly recommend Scott’s tours - you won’t be disappointed :)

Scott is just amazing. We expected a pretty average walking tour but it was so much more. History. Personal stories. And a real understanding of the culture of New Orleans in an area that was neglected for far too long. Can't recommend this tour highly enough.

Scott is an informed, passionate New Orleans local, and gives a personal touch of his life experience growing up in the city, a deep knowledge of history, and his own curiosity and love for his city shines through in helping share its charms, quirks and unique features with guests--he's incredibly giving of his time and energy, and a pleasure to work with--we only wish he'd be able to offer more frequent tours and venues so we can get even more from his skills!
