Programma

This experience is designed to introduce participants to the concept of urban hiking while out on a 3-5 mile hike. Participants will learn necessary hiking skills and concepts to hike for outdoor travel or as a recreational fitness activity. Content will cover fitness for hiking, route planning, proper clothing and gear, safety concerns, and environmental conditions.

During the experience, participants will:
1. Become familiar with the gear needed to hike in a mixed urban and trail environment.
2. Learn how to plan a hiking route around the city of Washington, DC.
3. Identify crucial safety practices for both physical activity and hiking, specifically.
4. Identify the benefits of physical activity and spending time in nature.

Over the past decade, I've developed my passion for fitness, the outdoors, and outdoor education. I've primarily worked with college students at DC area universities leading outdoor adventure trips as well as an Urban Hiking class for the past 4 semesters. The best part of Urban Hiking in DC is both the history of the city and the fantastic nature trails that are sometimes hidden in plain view. Seeing DC by foot is one of the best ways to do it and also get in solid exercise. I teach participants about hydration, nutrition, safety, recommended gear and apps, and outdoor education principles.
