Cosa farete

Our tour starts at Rákóczi Square, the heart of the once-neglected 8th District – now one of the most unique areas in Budapest. Our first stop will be Rákóczi Square Market Hall where your local guide will delve into the history of the neighbourhood. You’ll also be able to get a sense of the district’s truly local vibe, as you wander around snacking on traditional street food. From the market, we’ll meander down the small streets of this fascinating neighbourhood and walk amongst the hauntingly beautiful, crumbling facades on route to Horváth Mihály Square which is the starting point of the whole story of the 8th District. Here we’ll get to see one of the oldest Baroque churches in the city with a stunning interior that we’ll explore together. In the next stop we’ll see how old and new exist shoulder to shoulder, forming the identity of the neighbourhood and telling the story of Budapest. Mátyás Square is next on the agenda, a small square, the heart and soul of the neighbourhood on the brink of regaining its original charm. Towards the end of the tour, we’ll see two completely different but equally important parts of the district: the communist-era housing and the newly built Corvin alley with its brand new facades. Through all this I hope you will get a sense of the unique identity of the 8th district of Budapest.
Other things to note

Hi, my name is Gergő, it was my idea to create this experience. The reason for that is that I live here and I find it very interesting and exciting at the same time. I know the 8th district inside out since I started to discover it about 7 years ago when I moved here. Since that time an amazing change and development has taken place in a neighbourhood once being pretty dodgy. I studied cultural studies, I am very interested in art and history and this is a place where I can discover something every day. I love the local market where I go often to do my shopping. I also have a few favourites spots where I like to sit and have a good coffee or tea.

Gergo was a fantastic guide and really had a passion and connection to the area. The market and cafe where we stopped supported my values and was happy to patronize on the tour.

This was a fantastic tour - a real journey through the past, present and future of a fascinating part of the city. The tour touched on a vast array of topics - local food, architecture, the lives of ordinary Hungarians and much much more. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to go deeper than the surface of Budapest and find out more about this complex and fascinating city. Thank you!

Superb tour with gergo, he is extremely knowledgeable about the area and keen to share his passion with others. Great to see the small restoration workshop that you would never find on your own. A great way to spend a morning exploring outside the city centre with an engaging and insightful host!

Gergö was instantly warm and friendly. His English is excellent, so there’s no scratching your head wondering if you understand what he’s trying to communicate. He had stories to illuminate how and why conditions developed the way they did in Hungary. We were so pleased to have had him as our guide. I even had thoughts of paying him to extend our tour, but did not act on them. I’d seek him out next time in Budapest to help me learn more about Hungary.

This tour was pretty decent, they one thing that I felt it lacked on was the communism era information. I may have misunderstood but I presumed that communism was going to be a large focus. Rather it seemed an after thought.

I was the only guest on this tour. I was a bit concerned at first that it would be awkward. But Ange was very knowledgeable and approachable. It was a really interesting insight into the history of the district and Budapest as a whole. Beyond the normal generic tour
