Tokyo, Giappone

Esperienza proposta da Christopher

Offerta in Inglese

Cosa farete

We'll do a deep dive into Japan's indigenous spirits traditions. I'll guide you through a tasting of several major types of shochu including rice, barley, kokuto (Japanese brown sugar), sweet potato, and buckwheat. Oh, and don't forget about awamori. We'll talk about the aromas and flavors in a small group setting while enjoying the unique qualities of the bar. You'll also have a chance to try some barrel aged brands while experimenting with serving styles and figuring out what suits you best. After that you'll also have an opportunity to try your hand at creating an original shochu cocktail. By the end of this experience, you will have a better understanding of shochu and awamori than 99.9% of the residents of Japan. You will also be in a pretty good mood!
Other things to note
The bar is non-smoking. Casual attire is fine, and your shoes stay on. There are also outlets for charging phones. Please bring drinking snacks to share, and there's a microwave for guests to use.

My name is Christopher, and I'm the author of "The Shochu Handbook" (2014). I'm a dual-certified sommelier (SSI in Japan; SSA in the US), and I conduct industry- and consumer-focused shochu and awamori tastings all over the world while also consulting on shochu export and marketing. I'm from a beer brewing background and also hold the WSET Level 3 Sake qualification for good measure, so I can easily compare Japan's indigenous spirits with a number of the world's better-known drink traditions. In 2018 I won the Japan Brewing Society's "Brewing Culture Award" for my efforts at spirits education. I'm also a judge at international spirits competitions such as Spirits Selection and CINVE which occurs annually in Spain.

Dove ti troverai

The tasting will take place in a spacious, completely non-smoking shochu bar that has 80+ brands to choose from. Most of the shochu is from Japan's distilling mecca, Kyushu Island, which is home to more than two hundred shochu distilleries. There are also a few awamori for us to taste. This bar really is the epitome of choose your own adventure!

Thanks for the wonderful evening! From the beginning till the end I didn't felt bored. Chris is a really nice guy and a master in his field. The booze was also superb and plentiful. If you want to learn more about Japanese alcohol and drinking culture, you definitely have to book an appointment or one of his experiences.
