Welcome to Cornwall in the year of Covid 19.
Quite a few things are different this year...
I have signed up to the Airbnb cleaning protocol. My guest's safety is paramount. So to reassure you, all linen is washed at 90 degrees and hung to dry out in the Cornish sunshine on our super high Cornish washing line. Blown by sea breezes it is safe and fresh to snuggle into at bedtime...Every area of the flat will have been thoroughly cleaned according to very strict guidelines.
The rules say I can't offer home made scones or cakes or breakfast anymore - this is for your safety but I feel it makes the experience of staying much less special. Sorry!
I also have to request that you check out earlier than normal and check in later than guests were used to. This is to allow time for me and my assistant to clean safely and thoroughly. Also you will need to follow some rules - open windows before you leave, strip the bed and bag up the linen yourselves, throw the rubbish in the wheelie bin and make sure every little morsel of food has been removed from the flat.
I will also leave you some antibacterial products and instructions to keep you safe.

It is a very strange time but if we work together you can still have a lovely, happy holiday and leave with great memories of the unusual summer of 2020.

So onto the normal stuff now:
Our apartment is in the heart of Penzance's oldest street. Perfect for exploring Chapel Street's boutique shops or experiencing the cosy cafes, restaurants, and bars, come home to this welcoming newly refurbished space. Modern yet homely with a lovely woodburner for lighting after a beach walk on a winter's day it is a little gem to return to.

With windows at pavement level it is both naturally light and bright and filled with vases of fresh flowers and plants.
A super comfortable King size bed with Egyptian Cotton bed linen and a choice of feather or hollowfibre pillows and duvet, thick bath towels, a luxurious double shower, a fully equipped kitchen, central heating, unlimited hot water, and a woodburner - these are just some of the facilities that guests have said they appreciate.
Love the idea of being pampered? We have a wonderful beauty therapist bookable for a wide range of spa treatments 'at home' - perfect after a long walk on the beach or the coast path, or for a special occasion. Check out Home Spa Cornwall.

Accesso per gli ospiti
The apartment has its own gated entrance with code lock and is accessed from the top of Abbey Street. This is a shared gate with one other neighbour but it is quiet and rarely used by either the owner or the neighbour. The apartment has its own locked external entrance and an internal locked door dividing it from the stairs leading to the main house.
There is no access into the main house where we the owners now live with our dog Summer the Collie.
The apartment is completely private and a staircase and adjoining door (kept locked at all times) gives separation from the main house.
The house is built into a hill and the apartment has windows at pavement level and street level and enjoys a bright, sunny aspect.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
Please note that Penzance is extraordinarly busy at the moment following the release from Lockdown. During Thursday to Sunday nights Chapel Street is closed to traffic so the pubs and restaurants can extend their service on to the pavements and street. It is a great opportunity to wander safely, traffic free and explore the festive feel of the pubs and restaurants - more noisy than normal as a consequence.
As the apartment is in town we can't guarantee that it will be quiet all the time as it has shops and pubs in the nearby vicinity - but guests give this 'a great location' in their reviews partly because these facilities are so easily accessible. Some times are busier than others - as the town goes about its daily business but also when it celebrates its local annual festivals eg Mazey Day and Golowan, Christmas and New Year - but again visitors come especially to join in with these celebrations some of which are unique to Penzance.
We also can't offer you private parking but there is free on street parking within a couple of minutes walk. You can usually unload outside the house and we can then guide you as to where to park and we will provide you with a map indicating all the free parking. The town car parks are also free overnight.
The apartment enjoys a lot of natural light and has windows at pavement level of Chapel Street and Abbey Street.
Mobile phone signal in this part of Cornwall is extremely patchy for all mobile phone providers. Internet can also be slow - we are used too this - but it can come as a surprise to those used to superfast technology.
The woodburner is for your use but please follow the instructions for its use very carefully. We provide one bag of kiln dried logs, kindling, firelighters and matches to get you started. We can provide you with further bags at the cost of £6 per bag - we make no profit and save you the hassle of sourcing them. Please do not burn anything other than kiln dried logs...our chimney liners are very expensive and difficult to replace!

Penzance, Inghilterra, Regno Unito

Our house is the perfect place for exploring all that Penzance and the surrounding area has to offer.

Chapel Street has to be the obvious starting point with its quirky independent shops, pleasant eateries and the very famous ‘Egyptian House’ built in 1835 - the time when Britain first fell in love with all things Egyptian. Closer to home on the other corner of Abbey Street is the world famous Admiral Benbow pub with its much loved smuggler that straddles the rooftop aiming his flintlock gun directly at our house!

Less than five minutes’ walk from our house will bring you to the sea. Walk down the old cobbled Abbey Slip and you will be greeted with a panoramic view of the colourful bobbing yachts and sparkling water in the harbour and the smaller harbour basin where children kayak, paddleboard and swim. In the early 1900’s the circus came to town every year and elephants were seen bathing in the harbour basin after a well-attended parade down Chapel Street.

Five minutes’ walk in a different direction - down Chapel Street and through St Mary’s churchyard - and you will be faced with Cornish palms and the sea of Mount’s Bay. When the sun is warm and the palms are in flower and the air is heady with the sweetest perfume it is easy to think as you stand and gaze at the glistening sea that it might just be somewhere on the Mediteranean.

Further afield are many beautiful beaches: Sennen, Porthcurno, Marazion and the beaches of St Ives, to mention but a few. Cliff paths and castles on islands accessed by a cobbled causeway, wild flowers and rare birds – all are accessible by buses and trains that come and go from Penzance.

There is no need to worry about bringing you own transport! The train station is an easy walk and has a direct link with London. In the other direction and less than five minutes’ walk from the house you can book a ticket for the RMS Scillonian - one of only three Royal Mail Ships - which will transport you across the sea to the magical Isles of Scilly…go for a day trip and explore the beautiful sub-tropical gardens of Tresco, swim in the pristine aqua marine sea that laps the white sandy beaches, or go for longer and stay on one of the amazing off islands. Have an adventure and leave the hustle and bustle behind you.

But if you decide to stay with us and you want a complete break from domesticity – and you don’t want to use the cooking facilities offered in the well equipped kitchen – you will find there are many excellent places to eat within easy walking distance: The Artist Residence restaurant "The Cornish Barn" is just across the road from us and is incredibly popular serving cocktails, local beers, and an intersting smokehouse menu. ‘The Shore’ less than ten minutes’ walk away is getting rave reviews in the National press for its excellent menu with ingredients all locally sourced and fresh from the sea. Another good choice would be Penlee Gallery which offers fascinating exhibitions of works from artists past and present all associated with West Penwith, alongside a lovely little restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating – perfect and very undemanding sitting and eating in the sunshine of Penlee Gardens. There are also many pubs, winebars, and old fashioned tea shops. Try Mr Billy’s at the top of Chapel Street where they serve and sell locally produced coffees and teas and super delicious brownies. Vegetarians might enjoy the home-made meals served at Archie Browns on Bread Street. There are many more interesting eateries to explore – and a little further afield, Newlyn and Moushole both have equally interesting places to dine including The Tolcarne Inn Newlyn.
Don't forget to visit Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens!

I am a wife and mother of four young adults. I am currently 'resting' - after a career teaching children with severe learning difficulties - and instead I have spent time restoring our beautiful Georgian house which I somewhat irresponsibly bought at auction in 2014...what an immensely challenging but rewarding job that was! We as a family are very lucky to live as 'custodians' of a National Trust house out on the cliffs in Mullion on The Lizard peninsula. We can see Penzance on a clear day from here, and one day when everyone agrees the time is right we plan to move to the house in Chapel Street. Until then we love sharing it though Airbnb! I love cooking, and being creative. Any visitors to The Merchant Trader's House, 45 Chapel Street can be sure to be warmly welcomed with a home-made cream tea or cake, breakfast goodies in the fridge and a ready lit woodburner if the weather is inclement.

We really like to welcome all our guests in person, but at this time with social distancing essential we feel it is better for guests to self check in. We live at the property so are on hand if you need anything or have any questions.
Normally we would be very happy to take in your luggage before the check in time and hang onto it after check out. However, with Covid restrictions this isn't currently possible.
We have lived in and around Penzance and The Lizard for many years and can easily help you plan an itinery before you arrive if that is what you would like. Just ask.
