The studio is situated right in the center of the city, in the middle of the Dickens Area in the beautiful Bergkwartier, 50 meters from the big town square De Brink, but miraculously it usually is a very quiet place.

The studio is about 6.00 x 4.50 m. You have your own entrance and your own kitchen and bathroom. It has a big bed (1.60 x 2.00 m) with a great matrass. People always tell me how amazingly well they slept. The studio is comfortable for two adults but if necessary you can put up an extra stretcher, or even two, for children. Besides the bed, you’ll have two small easy-chairs, a dining table, a big closet for your clothes, television set and wifi.
You can cook your own food in the small but fully equipped modern kitchen, with induction hot plate, oven/microwave, refrigerator, Nespresso coffee machine etc. and a separate bathroom with toilet, shower and washbasin.

I do not serve breakfast but with cafe/lunchroom De Noorman I arranged a discount for you for their delicious breakfast. De Noorman is a cozy Scandinavian lunchroom 350m (4 minute walk) from At the foot of The Hill. It is run by Tove and Jurgen, two enthusiastic young people who obtain their supplies as much as possible from the region.
For each breakfast: All dairy products (milk in the cappuccino, yogurt, butter and eggs) come from dairy farm Den Hoek in Wilp; granola and wheat flour are purchased locally at the mill in Terwolde. You can choose from different types of coffee, which is made in a beautiful Italian coffee machine, and eight kinds of tea, which is served in a jar.
De Noorman is open for breakfast from Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 am to 11.00 am. In consultation earlier is also possible. Reservations for breakfast required with me.

1. Extensive breakfast: coffee and/or tea; fresh orange juice; locally baked baguette; butter, jam, ham, cheese; boiled egg; yogurt with granola and fresh fruit; vegetable (usually cucumber and tomato); crispbread; homemade cinnamon roll. Yogurt and granola can be exchanged for an extra baguette. Price: € 9.90; For guests of At the foot of The Hill: € 8.50.

Eating and drinking
There are café’s, bars and restaurants just around the corner and also spread over the whole city. Supermarkets, a bakery and a cheese shop are 2 minutes away on foot. Attention: on Sunday the shops are closed (on the first Sunday of the month they are open).

Every Friday and Saturday it is market day. This market has recently been awarded as the best market in The Netherlands and is at 50 meters distance from my house. On the market you’ll find fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, bread and cheese for your breakfast.

Museums and other places of interest
-The Brink, the huge old town square, almost traffic-free with many café’s and terraces.
-The nationally well-known Toys & Tin museum
-The Historical Museum
-The Great Synagogue in Moorish style of which I have a key, so I can show you around if you like
-The historical Bergkwartier and the Bergkerk
-The Great Church (Lebuïnus Church) and its tower
-The 450 year old library
-The beautiful and impressive river IJssel. It is very nice to make a walk or a bicycle tour along the river as well as through the other beautiful surroundings of Deventer (I have maps and gps-tracks of some nice routes)
-De Bolwerksmolen (an authentic windmill) on the other side of the river

Festivals in Deventer
Deventer is known for its festivals.
- Early July is the International Street Theatre Festival 'Deventer on Stilts'.
- On the first Sunday in August we have is the famous ‘Deventer Book Fair’, the largest annual book market in Europe.
- On the 5th of December St. Nicholas arrives by boat, a typical Dutch tradition.
- On one of the days of of Chanukah a big menorah is lit on the balcony of the Waag (on the Brink).
- The last weekend before Christmas the Charles Dickens Festival takes place. More than 100.000 people visit the town than. I live in the middle of the Dickens area and if you will be here during that period, I’ll make sure you’ll have (free) tickets.

The house
The house I live in lies in the heart of the mediaeval center of Deventer. It’s origin goes back to 1390. In these days it was a city-farm and the owner/inhabitant was a widow called Mette from Heyniken Ellensoen. That is all I know about her unfortunately…
The house is situated in the Bergkwartier (the district surrounding the Bergkerk, a church built on a Celtic hill). It is divided in a front house and a rear house (or annex, “achterhuis”, a word you might know from the Diary of Anne Frank), like many old Dutch trading houses.
I live upstairs, your apartment is at street level in the “achterhuis”. You have your full privacy.

I am a novelist, fond of trekking on foot or on bicycle. But I also like very much to stay at home. For me a home should be a glove which exactly fits and I found that home here. Deventer has stolen my heart, you will find out why…
Although I am a cheerful and sociable person, I am worried about the way we treat our planet and therefore I try to leave the car alone as much as possible, and travel by train and bicycle, I separate my garbage as good as I can, I try to buy the most of my food on the market which saves plastic etc.
Besides Dutch and English I speak a little Hebrew which I very much like to practice. The opportunity Airbnb gives me to get into contact with people from other countries is great because I think it is important to meet and learn from each other. You are very welcome here!
