yea, i know, sounds weird, eh, send somebody to the local DUMP? YES, because, the 'June 27th Flow' in 2014 did not TOUCH the recently built dump/transfer station. You can actually see the cooled lava that oozed thru the chain link fence, dribbled down the embankment, kissed the pavement, in a few spots, THEN STOPPED! If you continue down the road, which takes you back to Pahoa Town, you will be traveling thru the lava flow, keep your eyes open~

'lighthouse' (& i use that term lightly!!) was spared in the Kapoho Eruption in 1959-60. Legend says that Pele took human form, as an ugly old woman, shortly before the eruption. She went door-to-door seeking food & shelter. Everyone turned her away, EXCEPT the 'lighthouse' keeper. The lava went AROUND the concrete pad, leaving it untouched, surrounded by lava~

Open daily for wine tasting. The only winery on the Big Island. $5/$8 tastings, NanSea's Gourmet Cheese Spreads are a MUST, (inspired by a close friend!!) free walking tour of vineyard. Interesting wines, unexpected flavors, some estate wines, nice gift shop. NOT nightlife, they close at 5pm.
