Honduran / Island Food Specialties

A delicious island drink called a Monkey LaLa, is refreshing on a hot day as are the local Honduran beers - Salva Vida, Port Royal, Barena & Imperial. When in doubt, order anything with rum! A typical island dish usually consists of rice & beans, meat/fish, & a side of salad (pasta, potato) or vegetable. A baleada is a soft flour tortilla made fresh w/ refried beans, egg, avocado, optional meat, & cheese/butter, and folded in half. Pastelitos are fried bread pockets similar to empanadas, filled w/ chicken, beef, fish, or ham & cheese.

Friday Night Cookout in West End

On the western end of the West End strip, the Ebanks family hosts a weekly cookout, with plates around $8-10. It looks like a family gathering, but rest-assured, they’re open to the public. Combos of pork, chicken, rice & beans, cole slaw, plantains & yucca. Home made lemonade & a Honduran corn dessert round out the offerings. This is as island-authentic as it gets, with family, friends, tourists, & travelers lining up & hanging out to chow down on home-cooked island food!

Water Taxis

You can catch a water taxi at the end of the dock by waving them down. In high season they are back and forth all day long and every 5-10 minutes. Rides are $3USD each way.

Taxis

We recommend taxis/water taxis after dark. Most know how to find the Turtle Beach area, but you can tell them it is the right turn after Luna Beach & before The Lighthouse (El Faro) if they need landmarks. Expect to pay between $10-12 to/from West End or West Bay, and closer to $30-35 to the airport or further. Prices are usually negotiable so feel free to make an offer - but settle on a price before getting into the vehicle!

Skin Protection

We recommend ALWAYS wearing bug spray, whatever kind you choose, when outdoors on Roatan, even when dining out. Sandflies (no-see-ums) are common, and can leave their mark on unprotected skin. You can buy OFF & calamine lotion at all of the grocery stores on the island. Peak times to wear bug spray are in the morning and from 4-7pm. We recommend always using some type of sunscreen — the sun in the Caribbean is typically quite strong. However, if you can, avoid any protection before going in the water, because the chemicals are harmful to the reef & sealife!

SCUBA Diving

Roatan’s #1 attraction is its diving. There are dive shops all over the island. But if you're looking for convenience, personal attention AND 5-star service, Denisse & Merry at Clearwater Adventures are located 200 yards from the Turtle Beach dock. In addition to diving, you can do tag-along snorkeling, or go on the popular lunch/snorkel trip to a local village with THE BEST key lime pie! Snorkeling

If you’d rather stay closer to the surface, the snorkeling at Turtle Beach is fun just because of the convenience! There is a lot of marine life around the dock, rocks and coral. You can also rent kayaks in West End or West Bay, head out to the reef, anchor and snorkel. There's also great snorkeling at the western end of West Bay Beach, in front of Grand Roatan resort. Underwater markers guide you where to go. The waters are deeper there, so snorkel at both locations! ***See SCUBA Diving advice for snorkel trips!

Sunsets

By far a favorite activity of everyone on the island! In West End, the usual place to watch the sunset is Sundowners where locals & tourists mingle....located near the circle at the entrance to West End. In West Bay, all of the resorts/bars have prime viewing. Enjoy a more relaxed vibe 5 minutes from the house at Ibagari or Xbalanque. The sun sets year round between 5:00 and 6:00 PM. Nothing like a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres to see it down! Or, just walk 200ft from the house & enjoy the sunset from our beach!
