Famous for Thomas Hardy, 19th century novelist & poet, and one of England’s most notorious judges, the “hanging judge” George Jeffreys. Roman heritage with well preserved Roman Town House in Colliton Park, & the Amphitheatre at Maumbury Rings, a Neolithic henge. Nearby is Maiden Castle, one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe - the size of 50 football pitches. All free entry.

Beautiful safe sandy beach, a favourite of King George III, with Italian ice cream and donkeys! Working harbour with lift-up bridge for tall masts - sit and watch the world go by. Great restaurants and cafés. Walk or drive to the Isle of Portland for great views of Chesil Beach and the Fleet ( a lagoon - great for bird watching).
