Olhão is an important fishing town in the Algarve. In the town you can find one of the most important markets of the Algarve. These markets are located inside two striking red buildings. One is for fruits and vegetables and the other one is for fish. Moreover, from Olhão you can take the boat to some of the most beautiful islands of the Algarve.

Faros Old Town centre is a beautiful place to visit and you will find also good shopping, cafe's and nice restaurants here. Faro is the capital and biggest city of the Algarve, with a population of about 118.000 people. Faro Airport is the only airport of the Algarve. You can find a lot of Portuguese culture and history in the town. For example, there is a beautiful cathedral in Faro, as well as several churches. Moreover, Faro is located close to the Ria Formosa natural park.

Silves was an important town during the Middle Ages. It was actually the capital of the Algarve in that time. As such, you can still find a lot of historic points of interest in the town. The main attraction is the castle of Silves, which is still in good shape. A visit to the castle is highly recommended.

Loulé is the ideal town in the Algarve to explore for a day trip. In this historically interesting town you can discover a real taste of Portuguese culture. The town has a beautiful centre and a magnificent market hall. The narrow streets take you to important churches and you can discover the ruins of a 13th century castle. When you are visiting the Algarve in August, then the Noite Branca (White Night) is one popular party not to be missed.

You simply can't leave Portugal without having seen the wonderful places around Sintra and this is my two favorites. Sintra is about half hour from Lisbon and you won't regret the +4 hour drive there. http://www.sintra-portugal.com

Sagres is at the extreme western tip of the Algarve and is like no other destination in southern Portugal. It is a region for the adventurous and those who seek to pit themselves against the wild environments. These dramatic landscapes are dominated by nature’s raw power; from the raging seas that carve immense cliffs, the bracing winds that create barren landscapes, through to the intense summer sun, which burns careless tourists. Sagres is primarily a surfing destination, but there are sheltered pristine beaches for relaxing on, and an unassuming cool vibe about the town. Day-trippers are drawn to Sagres by the Cabo de Sao Vicente, a remote and bleak headland, aptly fitting for the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe.

Lagos’ extensive history is reflected in the varied attractions which are found throughout the city; there are ancient Moorish walls, a 17th-century fort and extravagant Baroque churches. The focal point of Lagos is the pretty harbour estuary, whichand this leads past the small fishing harbour to the modern marina complex. To the south of Lagos is the Ponta da Piedade headland, a series of highly weathered cliffs that are lined with spectacular grottos, arches, sea caves, and are regarded as the finest natural feature of the Algarve. Here you can walk the cliffs on sand trails, paved trails and wooden trails - and watch the spectacular sunset over the sea. There are many beaches along the coastline, some you enter by climbing down steep cliffs and some are sandy beaches reached by car. Praia Camilo is one of my favourites, you enter the beach by a looong staircase - good exercise :) But you should be there early in the morning before it gets rowdy. Watch the flag and dont go in the water if the flag is red, yellow means watch up it can be dangerous. Extending to the east of Lagos is the 4km long Meia Praia Beach, the largest sandy beach of the western Algarve, while within the Ponta da Piedade headland are the picturesque cove beaches of Praia da Dona Ana, and Praia do Camilo. There is a lot to see within Lagos, and the city is one of the most popular destinations for a day trip.

Waterpark

Aqualand is located in Alcantarilha, the next village, just a short drive from the house.. One of their highlights is the Kamikaze, which is the highest water slide in Portugal (36 metres). You won’t be able to find such a high water slide in any of the other parks. Another unique slide is the Banzai Boggan, in which you slide down super fast on a fibre glass bodyboard from a height of 23 metres. Additionally, they have many other water slides and a part for small kids, but they are more or less comparable to what you can find in the other water parks of the Algarve. The regular entrance fee is € 29.

Slide & Splash is located near Lagoa. One of its highlights is the Black Hole, a water slide so dark that you won’t know when you are turning left or right. Other highlights are the Big Wave, the Disco River and the Kamikaze. In addition, there are also some animal shows. The rest of the water park is quite comparable to the others. The regular entrance fee is € 27, so slightly cheaper than other water parks.

Zoomarine is located in Guia. This family park is focused around marine life. There are plenty of animal shows, with dolphins, seals, sea lions and more. All shows are fun to watch and every show also has an educational element in it. If you want, you can even swim with the dolphins yourself for an extra price. In addition to the shows, Zoomarine also has a water park with many slides. Compared to the other water parks in the Algarve, these slides are nothing crazy. They are fun nonetheless. Furthermore, Zoomarine has other amusements, such as the pirate ship and the giant wheel. That is something the other family parks don’t have. The regular entrance fee is € 29.

Surfing

The Algarve is one of the best places in Europe for surfing. The waves here are perfect for surfing, especially in the area near Sagres and on the west coast of the Algarve. If you want even bigger waves, come in the winter. In general, the Algarve as a surf destination is growing in popularity. And don’t worry if you have no surf experience: there are good surf schools that offer surf classes. You can also rent a surfboard from these places.
