In the mid 1970's the government decided that Bulgaria needed a large-scale cultural center. The deadline for its construction was 1981, to host the celebrations marking 1300 years of the establishment of the Bulgarian state.
The construction of the complex took only 3 years (1979-1981). The foundations are made of 10 000 tones of steel.
The official opening of NDK took place on 31th of March 1981 to mark 1 300 years since the founding of the Bulgaria state.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the crown jewel of Sofia. It is one of the largest Eastern orthodox cathedrals in the world. Its foundation stone was laid in 1882. However, most of the construction work actually took place between 1904 and 1912.The main dome is 45 m tall and Christian Lord’s Prayer is inscribed with thin golden letters around it. The gorgeous chandeliers suspended from the domes were specially made for the church in Munich, Germany.

During the construction of the second phase of the underground, remains of the ancient Roman city Serdika were uncovered and are on display to the public, under a protective glazed roof.Dating back to a period from 1st till 6th century AD, early examples of a water and sewage system, as well as ornately tiled floors have been uncovered.

Complex Ancient Serdica

"Serdika"During the construction of the second phase of the underground, remains of the ancient Roman city Serdika were uncovered and are on display to the public, under a protective glazed roof.Dating back to a period from 1st till 6th century AD, early examples of a water and sewage system, as well as ornately tiled floors have been uncovered.
Built in 1907 by the Austrian architects Helmer & Felner, the National Theatre is one of the most ornate buildings in Sofia. The 40 metre high façade, is fronted by a large pediment, supported on six white marble columns, depicting Apollo and the muses. The twin towers that rise up behind are crowned with sculptures of the goddess Nike.The interior was destroyed by fire in 1923, and restored again six years later increasing the theatres seating capacity to over 1000. The ornate main hall has an 850 audience capacity. The stage curtain, with its mythical firebird motive from Stravinsky’s ballet, was woven by women from Panagyurishte.

It’s a wonder that this building has survived unscathed for such an amount of time, and all around are interesting little details that hit home the great age of the site and civilisations that have passed though.
Step inside to view the detailed medieval frescoes that had been painted over by the Ottomans when the church was converted to a mosque in the 1600s.
These were only rediscovered and restored in the 1990s. Outside you can see the flagstones of a Roman street and other remnants of Ancient Serdica.

bulevard "Vitosha"It’s a thoroughly pleasant place to spend a couple of hours; the cafes along the pedestrian street have outdoor seating and in recent years the lampposts, benches and kiosks have been redesigned into an elegant art nouveau style, recalling the early years of the Bulgarian Revival.
The easiest way to access Vitosha is via Aleko, the mountain’s ski resort, which is where the Simeonovo gondola lift will drop you off.
From there the walk to Vitosha’s Black Peak is surprisingly light when then weather’s good in spring or autumn, as the peak is part of a large plateau that seems to go on forever thanks to its shallow gradient.
Of course, you don’t need to go that far for an incredible, vertiginous view of Sofia.
