The Cathedral was founded by Emperor Menelik Il in commemoration of the. 1896 victory that the country made under his leadership over the invading Italian army. A relic of St George was carried to the historical Adwa battle field inspiring the emperor to build the Cathedral as a tribute to the Saint that ensured the victory of the war. The cathedral has a traditional Ethiopian design and octagonal shape and the outer walls of the building are covered in splendid artwork and mosaics, including paintings by Maitre Afewerk Tekle — the renowned and world-acclaimed Ethiopian Artist. A museum is found in the church which has some useful information and interesting displays. From the top of the Museums tower one can have spectacular view of the city.

A range of exhibits are showcased in the three-floor building of the National Museum incorporating wide scope of Ethiopian history dating back from prehistoric ages to the present time. Most of the fascinating artifacts provide a visitor ample historical overview of Ethiopia. The most famous exhibit found in the Museum is the replica statue of Lucy, considered the oldest hominid skeleton estimated to have lived in our planet 3.18 million years ago. Ethiopian artworks depicting the historical legacies of the Axumite and the Lalibella Kingdoms, as well as relics from the Tana Monastery and the Haile Selassie reign are displayed in the museum that needs to be seen. Another great museum in Addis Ababa, ten minutes-walk from the National Museum, is the Ethnological Museum found inside the main university campus.
