Lake Hopatcong Things to Do & See

Enjoy a variety of farms, food vendors, crafters, makers, artisans, artists, direct sales, local businesses, vintage dealers and community groups! Location: DPW / Hopatchung Park & Ride Lot (next door to Walgreens) Every 3rd Sunday of the month, 12-4PM. Location: Maxim Glen and/or Modick Park Saturdays, July 9th, August 20th, September 10th, Oct 15th, Dec 10th, 12-4PM

No car, no problem! You can take the NJ Transit train to the nearest station and Uber/Lyft your way around locally. The closest train station is Mt. Arlington (7 mins away). NJ Transit lines, Montclair-Boonton & Morris & Essex stop here. There are trains directly to/from NY Penn & Newark Penn Stations. The station has a free parking lot & bike rack. No overnight parking is allowed. Check website for schedules. Although Uber/Lyft will come to the area, be aware since we are in a mountainous, they do take a long time so better to schedule ahead or time.

During warm weather, be sure to bring a bathing suit, sunblock, and flip flops if you plan to go spend a day (or days) at the lake. Also, bring a pair of sneakers if you want to go for a hike or walking through the farmers market. The nights get chilly, make sure to bring a light jacket or hoody. We live in the mountains so bug spray is a must! We do supply in the house, but bring your own if you are sensitive to certain brands or have allergies.

The NJ Governor announced that all NJ States Parks will be free for the rest of 2022. This includes Hopatcong Sate park, which is a 7 minute ride from the cottage. If you are planning to go on a weekend, I highly suggest you get there early because once the park is filled, you will be turned away. Lake Hopatcong has multiple towns & counties that surround the lake, so you will hear people reference various names that may or may not mean the same thing. Lake Hopatcong is where the cottage is located, the municipal is called Jefferson Township. So when putting the address in your GPS, you will enter Lake Hopatcong, NJ 07849. But locally, if people ask you where are you located, you will say I am on the Jefferson side of the lake. To keep it simple, Jefferson Township = Lake Hopatcong (the town) Other towns that surround the lake: Hopatcong, Mount Arlington, Roxbury/Landing.

The best places to swim on the lake are either Mount Arlington Beach or Hopatcong State Park. Mount Arlington Beach PROs: only a 3 minute drive from the cottage, clean with a lifeguard on duty all week. CONs: It's not free. Pricing is by car: $10/car on weekdays, $20/car on weekends Hopatcong State Park. PROs: Free, have picnic tables & grills to bbq. Its a 7 min drive from the cottage. CONs: Gets filled quickly, especially on the weekends. Swimming is only allowed Wed - Sun. We provide beach towels, a cooler, beach chairs, and an umbrella for your use during your stay.
