High-quality homemade products are simply served on a wooden board or between two slices of bread. At the “La Prosciutteria” you can order a wooden board with a mix of delicious ham, salami, and bread with the best cheese, along with a glass of the local Chianti Classico wine.

The best contemporary takes on traditional Milanese cuisine can be found at Ratanà, a restaurant in Isola owned by the imaginative chef Cesare Battisti. When you’re in Milan, forget about pizza and pasta. Sure, both are available and can be downright heavenly. But regional distinctions shape culinary traditions, as they do many other aspects of Italian culture, and in Lombardy the fare is heartier than down south, with more meat and rice dishes on offer. Chef's Cesare Battisti version of the Milan classic risotto alla Milanese con ossobuco (saffron risotto with braised veal shank) is silky smooth and vivid in both color and avor.

Sightseeing

Milan’s most famous landmark by a long shot, the Duomo is one of those rare structures that can accurately be described as “awe-inspiring.” Purchase your ticket online to skip the lines at the ticket shop. Even if you don’t go inside, a walk around the statue-studded exterior and up to the cathedral’s roof is a must. While there are higher observation points in the city, there’s something exhilarating about glimpsing the Alps through the cathedral’s marble pinnacles and spires, adorned with heavenly statues and decorations.

This relatively new neighbourhood has seen Milan grow up, so to speak: the emphasis on height and length is a new phenomenon. Designed by starchitect César Pelli, the UniCredit Tower—which also happens to be Italy’s tallest skyscraper—has redefined Milan’s skyline; it also acts as a shining beacon, calling all of Milan to its futuristic and curvy-lined shopping complex, Palazzo Lombardia. But perhaps more eye-catching, despite their more diminutive stature, are the Bosco Verticale high-rises. Planted with 900 frees, bushes and other flora, these two vertical forests are a surreal albeit welcome sight: they represent an environmentally responsible approach to urban development.

Even if you don’t fancy shopping, the arcade is worth visiting from an architectural standpoint. What makes the Galleria stand out from similar arcades around the world is its immense scale and audacious dome. The four lunettes beneath the central octagon feature mosaics representing the four continents (America, Europe, Asia and Africa). On the floor below there are splendid mosaics portraying the coat of arms of Turin, Florence, Rome and Milan. People crowd around the Turin coat of arms, waiting their turn to place a heel on the testicles of the bull and spin around three times, which many believe will bring them good luck.

This museum holds the pick of Italy’s masters, including Titian, Raphael, Caravaggio and the Bellini brothers. The huge Napoleon statue in the palace’s courtyard alludes to the origins of this collection–many of the most impressive paintings were looted from Venice and brought to Milan, the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy, under the orders of the French general. Don’t miss the glass restoration chamber in Room 18, where the museum’s conservation process is made transparent.

Perhaps one of the most famous paintings in the world, Leonard da Vinci’s The Last Supper has been reproduced to death, so much so that you might question the point of seeing it in person. When purchasing your ticket to The Last Supper, add on a ticket for the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, the historic library housing some of da Vinci’s sketches.

Built by Francesco Sforza in the 15th century, this castle was originally a family residence, and quite an imposing one at that. It was in the late 19th and early 20th century that its signature Filarete Tower was added to the façade by Luca Beltrami as part of a partial reconstruction. The halls that once held Napoleon’s troops now constitute the city’s largest exhibition complex. The Museo d’Arte Antica (Ancient Art Museum) is particularly popular, mostly because it occupies the Sala delle Asse, which was decorated by da Vinci.

If opera isn’t your bag, check out the theater’s other offerings, which range from symphony concerts and recitals to ballets and talks. Milan’s Teatro alla Scala is one of the most celebrated opera houses in Europe, and has been since its founding in the late 18th century by Archduchess Maria Theresa, the Hapsburg ruler responsible for a number of the city’s cultural institutions. While the sumptuous crimson- and gold- coloured interior can be glimpsed on a visit to the theater’s museum, nothing beats joining the vociferous crowd (celebrated tenor Roberto Alagna famously walked off stage in 2006 after he was booed in a performance of Franco Zerelli’s “Aida”) for a night of music.
