MARCELINO MENÉNDEZ PELAYO (Santander, 1856-1912). He won at the age of 22 the Chair of Critical History of Spanish Literature of said University, becoming perhaps the youngest professor in the world. In 1881, to the 25 years, is chosen academic of the Real Academy of the Language. Later it will be of the History (1883), of Moral and Political Sciences (1889) and of Fine Arts of San Fernando (1892). In 1905 he presented his candidacy for the Nobel Prize and in 1909 he was elected director of the Royal Academy of History. He was Deputy in Cortes and Senator until his death by the Spanish Royal Academy.

A parte de la Biblioteca se puede visitar la casa museo de Menéndez Pelayo

Precioso edificio, con el museo de arte moderno al lado. Este museo no sé si estará abierto, porque este invierno hubo un incendio, para variar. La Biblioteca si está abierta.

Llamada así por ser la biblioteca personal de Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, el gran intelectual español de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Su colección responde a las inquietudes investigadoras de un especialista en Humanidades, Bibliografía y Pensamiento histórico y literario. En su testamento la donó, junto con el edificio con jardín en que se hallaba, a la ciudad de Santander. También dejó dispuesto que a partir de su muerte (ocurrida en 1912) no se incluyeran nuevos fondos.
