Cosa ti viene in mente se pensi alle Isole Cayman? Ovviamente sole, mare e spiagge sabbiose. Ma anche le navi da crociera che vi attraccano. O magari Tom Cruise, nel film "Il socio", a bordo di un motoscafo in quest'incantevole location che allude alla reputazione delle isole come grande centro bancario offshore. Certo, ci sono moltissime banche alle Cayman, ma non sei qui per questo motivo. Piuttosto, non perderti la Seven Mile Beach, il cui nome dà facilmente l'idea della sua impressionante lunghezza. Interamente accessibile al pubblico, se ti piace camminare puoi percorrerla a piedi da un estremo all'altro. La maggior parte delle persone sceglie una zona e vi si sistema per trascorrere una giornata di sole e surf. Questa spiaggia di sabbia finissima ornata di palme da cocco è spesso menzionata come una delle più belle dei Caraibi, e anche quando le navi da crociera approdano in città (no, non quella di Tom), è abbastanza spaziosa da non sembrare mai davvero affollata. Queste isole coralline caraibiche hanno anche altro da offrire. Il Territorio britannico d'oltremare delle Isole Cayman comprende tre isole "sorelle": Grand Cayman, Little Cayman e Cayman Brac. La maggior parte delle strutture ricettive si trova sulla più grande, Grand Cayman, con la sua lunga spiaggia e la capitale George Town. Ma anche sulle isole più piccole c'è molto da scoprire, soprattutto per gli amanti della natura, sia terrestre che acquatica.

 

Pareti verticali e relitti

Se sei un appassionato di immersioni e non vedi l'ora di trovarti faccia a faccia con le creature marine, questo è il posto per te. Le Isole Cayman sono circondate da barriere coralline che ne fanno una delle migliori destinazioni subacquee dei Caraibi. Molti dei siti più noti distano pochi minuti dalla riva, rendendo estremamente facile raggiungere formazioni coralline, caverne, grotte, tunnel, relitti e pareti verticali, il tutto con un'eccellente visibilità.

Little Cayman sarà anche la più piccola delle tre isole, ma le sue meraviglie acquatiche compensano ampiamente le sue ridotte dimensioni. Con oltre 50 siti di immersione intorno all'isola, alcuni con profondità fino a 1.800 metri e altri solo 6 metri sotto al livello del mare, le sue incredibili acque turchesi sono un paradiso per i subacquei. La riserva marina di Bloody Bay, che prende il nome da un'antica battaglia tra i pirati dei Caraibi e i britannici, si trova appena al largo della costa ed è uno dei siti preferiti sia dai sub esperti che dai principianti. Il sito più spettacolare è il Bloody Bay Wall, una barriera corallina composta da una parete che precipita a più di 1.500 metri di profondità. L'eccezionale visibilità, che in media si aggira intorno ai 30 metri, facilita l'avvistamento di razze, tartarughe e squali alle prese con le loro vicissitudini quotidiane.

Cayman Brac, l'isola più lontana da Grand Cayman, merita sicuramente il breve volo o tragitto in barca, un po' più lungo, per raggiungerla. Il relitto del capitano Keith Tibbetts è uno dei più famosi al mondo. Si tratta infatti dell'unica nave da guerra russa che è possibile esplorare in tutto l'emisfero occidentale. L'ex fregata missilistica russa, lunga 100 metri, è stata acquistata dal governo delle Isole Cayman e affondata a metà degli anni '90 per creare una barriera corallina artificiale. Oggi ospita una diversificata popolazione di creature marine, tra cui cernie, scorfani, razze, barracuda, pesci scoiattolo rossi, pesci angelo e murene verdi, che si aggirano con disinvoltura intorno a due cannoni giganti, creando ottimi scenari fotografici.

Passeggiare nella natura

Se preferisci avere i piedi ben piantati sulla terra ferma, sappi che non devi per forza immergerti per godere della fauna selvatica delle Cayman. Gestita dal National Trust for the Cayman Islands, la Mastic Reserve sull'isola Grand Cayman è pensata per proteggere un'area di foresta secca subtropicale tipica dei Caraibi, minacciata dalla deforestazione in molte aree. All'interno della riserva si trova il Mastic Trail, un sentiero di ghiaia con secoli di storia, abbandonato una volta costruite le strade dell'isola, ma in seguito recuperato e rimesso in sesto per fornire un percorso escursionistico di 3 chilometri attraverso foreste, palme e zone paludose di mangrovie. Allacciati gli scarponi e cospargiti di repellente per zanzare prima di metterti in marcia alla scoperta di orchidee selvatiche, uccelli e piccoli animali come lucertole, rane e paguri. Il National Trust organizza visite guidate che durano da due a tre ore, ma puoi anche munirti di una mappa e scoprire il percorso per conto tuo e gratuitamente.

A cinque minuti di auto troverai un'altra attrazione del National Trust: il giardino botanico Queen Elizabeth II. Inaugurato dalla regina britannica nel 1994, è un posto meraviglioso per una passeggiata tra giardini fioriti e laghetti ricoperti di ninfee, accompagnati dalle farfalle che sorvolano le numerose orchidee. Il parco ospita quattro specie di orchidee che non si trovano in nessun altro luogo del pianeta, tra cui l'orchidea della banana selvatica, il fiore nazionale delle Cayman. Il Queen Elizabeth II è inoltre impegnato nella protezione dell'iguana blu, specie in via di estinzione. Con un po' di fortuna, puoi vederne qualcuno che si scalda al sole dei Caraibi o passeggia per il parco. Per aumentare le possibilità di avvistare un "drago blu", prenota una delle visite guidate del parco.
