Tucked away in the Algarve hills, the small spa town of Monchique is popular for its bicarbonated spring waters, rich in sodium and flouride and known to aid respiratory problems and various other ailments. Set in a lush, green valley 20 km inland from Portimão in the western Algarve, its fresh mountain air and spectacular views of the coastal plain in the distance are a refreshing change from the region’s bustling beach resorts, particularly in summer. High above sea-level, it has been a spa resort since Roman times due to the healing qualities of its spring waters, with subsequent takers including Portugal’s King João II and Queen Amélia.

Monchique is in the middle of mountains and offers many spas. The water here is said to be healing. A great town to walk around with beautifull viewpoints.

Monchique’s central square has a small paved area with benches, trees, statues and tiles, a few cafés and shops, and a pretty water feature with a Moorish-style water wheel. One of the charming things to see in Monchique are the many statues and sculptures dotted around the main square, then head up to view the impressive Manueline doorway of the parish church. There are lots of craft shops to explore then carry on up to Fóia and enjoy the views from the highest point in the Algarve.

Hiding in the hills this wonderful town is about a 30 minute drive from Alvor. It has a very special charm. Walk to the top of mount Foia for some of the best views all across Algarve.
