Ancient Hawaiian rock carvings. Bring some water, it's hot.

Trailhead is at the Holoholokai Beach Park. Moderate 1 mile hike to the petroglyph field.

Go early in the morning to this amazing example of ancients Hawaiians carving picto-grams in this incredibly hard lava rock. Look for the map of the entire island, divided into ahupua`as - or self-sustaining pie-like sections - from mauka (mountain) to makai (sea.) (The antithesis to our current culture!) The trail is near the end of Holoholokai State Park near the Fairmont Orchid in Mauna Lani.

We love parking at the public parking access, walking the trail to the coast, & having lunch at Napua, and then laying out on the beach. Public parking access closes at 6pm.

Very Interesting petroglyphs at the end of a short hike. Be sure to take water and try not to go during the heat of the day.
