The Isaac Hale Beach Park includes Pohoiki Beach, one of the newest black sand beaches in the world that resulted from the 2018 lava eruption! Although the sands are soft and wonderful for sunbathing, the waves here are recommended for experienced surfers only and swimming is an infrequent occurrence with its strong currents. This area is about 6.2 miles or a 15 minute drive from our center along the enchanting Red Road that hugs the coast and passes through tree tunnels and fresh lava fields on the way to this beach. The 2018 lava eruption also inundated the local boat ramp here, creating a few small thermal ponds in the process. The Department of Health advises to not enter these ponds with cuts or open wounds because of the risk of bacterial infections, and therefore entering these ponds is at your own risk.

A newly formed Black sand beach formed in 2018, life guard tower. Just minutes away from the Bali House! A Must see!

Experience where one of the 2018 Kilauea Volcano lava eruption came to an end, literally at the beach. It is mesmerizing, magical, beautiful and fascinating to see for yourself. Here you can also (at your discretion) swim/enter “new warm ponds” or sun bath on giant black sand beach and swim. This part of the ocean specifically after the eruption has become more for advanced swimmers, always use caution and safe swimming. Note; there are only portable bathroom and no beach showers

Awesome spot late afternoon, when the warm water is welcome.

Pohoiki was a beloved local surf spot until the 2018 eruption. It is now a scientific marvel as it has changed all understanding of beach formation, birthing a beautiful new black sand beach and a few new hot ponds. The drive down is remarkable as you pass through dense jungle terrain, coastal drop offs into deep blue ocean, and the road through cleared lava flow. The shoreline itself has become rather treacherous and I would not recommend swimming in the ocean here. Experienced surfers no longer go out here due to the danger (and lack of good surf) the new coastline presents. From the parking lot you can walk right of the lifeguard tower, near the tree line, and find ponds varying in size and depth. There are also ponds to the right of the tower to wade in. The ponds rise and fall with the tide, serving to filter the water some. Please be mindful that warm water breeds bacteria and make sure you have no open wounds if you decide to enter the water. We recommend bringing a jug of clean water to rinse yourself after (there is no running water or shower).
