Colorful gondola-like boats take visitors on cruises while food vendors, artisans and mariachi bands float past. The atmosphere is festive, especially on weekends. To visit Xochimilco is a treat, but not for the faint of heart. Xochimilco is a series of small villages, or pueblos, that are now surrounded by the city, best known for the canals that traverse them. You can rent a "trajinera", a colorful boat, and navigate the cnaals, visit some chinampas (little islands along the canals man-made for agriculture). Other boats will approach yours to sell toys, food (delicious quesadillas!) and beverages. Even Mariachi boats navigate the canals and ask if you'd like to hear a song for a fee. It is a super fun day-trip that you surely won't forget!
